Water from the pre-treatment filter is supplied to the input of the reverse osmosis system and then to the pump, which increases the pressure. Under a pressure of about 8 atm., created by the pump, the water passes through the membrane block. In the membrane block, on special semi-permeable membranes, the flow of the initial water is divided into a filtrate (water that has passed through the membrane and is partially purified from dissolved mineral salts) and a concentrate (water enriched with colloidal particles and dissolved salts). The membrane block consists of membranes located in pressure housings.

The concentrate is partially drained into the drain, and the other part is sent to the pump inlet via the return line. The presence of the return line allows saving expensive treated water due to the secondary use of the concentrate. However, a significant return of the return water to the pump inlet worsens the quality of the resulting filtrate. The filtrate (demineralized water) goes directly to the consumer or to the storage tank.

The system’s performance and consumption of source water depend on the temperature and composition of the source water; performance decreases with an increase in the total mineralization of the water relative to the test water.
